Horse Fencing

Horse fencing offers several benefits and features that make it essential for equine safety and property management. Horse fencing comes in several safe, durable options including wood, PVC/vinyl, wire mesh, pipe, and flexible rail systems. The best choice depends on your priorities: safety, visibility, cost, and maintenance. Lobos Fence provides a Free Estimate on all Horse Fence projects.

Common Types of Horse Fencing

Wooden Board Fencing: Highly visible and traditional but requires regular maintenance and can be costly.

Vinyl/PVC Fencing: Attractive and low maintenance, but more expensive upfront.

Horse-Safe Wire (V-mesh or No-Climb): Prevents hooves from getting caught; affordable but less visible unless paired with a top board.

Pipe or Steel Board Fencing: Extremely durable and safe, with a clean look; higher installation cost.

Electric Fencing (Tape or Rope): Effective for training and keeping horses off fences but should be used with visible materials for safety.

Safety Guidelines

Height: 4.5–5 ft minimum for pastures; 6 ft for stall runs.

Bottom Clearance: 6–12 inches to prevent foals from rolling under or horses getting legs trapped.

Visibility: Horses must clearly see the fence; white boards or coated wire improve safety.

Avoid: Barbed wire and large square mesh, which can cause severe injuries

“Armando is amazing to work with! Communicates well, shows up early and when he says he will. Very quick and efficient. He built our fence to the specifications we requested and it looks amazing. Our neighbor who works construction commented, ‘That's a very sturdy and well-built fence’ after seeing it! Very happy, hire him for the job; you will not be disappointed.”
